Swansea University
The event will be held at the Swansea University’s Bay Campus in south-west Wales which is situated on a 65 acre site on the eastern approach into Swansea and has the distinction of being one of the few global universities with direct access onto a beach and its own seafront promenade. The scientific programme will be held in the Engineering Central Building. And the social event will be in the Great Hall Building, all within a two minute walk. There’s stunning coastal scenery on our doorstep (we’re on the edge of the beautiful Gower Peninsula), yet we’re within easy reach of Swansea, which offers a thriving cultural scene and the best of modern city life.
Swansea Bay Region
Modern and cosmopolitan with its waterfront development, Swansea is also Dylan Thomas country, steeped in tradition, culture, and character. Travel just a few minutes and you reach the Maritime Quarter, a modern waterfront village complete with restaurants, art gallery, theatre and a busy marina. The other side of the city is the old fishing village of Mumbles, whose unique seaside atmosphere is complemented by a vibrant social scene. The 20,000+ seat Liberty Stadium is home to football club Swansea City and Ospreys Rugby. It also hosts major pop and rock concerts. The Gower Peninsula, Britain’s first “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, is within easy reach from the University. Unspoilt beaches and dramatic cliff top views provide a stunning location for water-sports, cycling and walking, as well as unparalleled research opportunities for students studying natural sciences.
Swansea itself is a lively city of 230,000 people. Its friendly shopping centre includes a world-famous indoor market that dates back to the Middle Ages and offers traditional, locally produced food. Culturally, the city is home to the Dylan Thomas Centre, which celebrates the life and work of the great Welsh poet. Theatres, festivals, museums and galleries enhance Swansea’s rich cultural diversity.
The surrounding area is also worth exploring. Within just a few miles you’ll find:
- Carmarthenshire – the “Garden of Wales”
- “Waterfall country” – the Vales of Afan and Neath
- The wild, mountainous beauty of the Brecon Beacons
- Countless medieval castles and historic monuments
- Singleton Botanical Gardens and the National Botanic Garden of Wales
